Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Kicks Off 70th Anniversary Celebration with Performance by Two-Time GRAMMY Award-Winner Terrace Martin
Legendary Producer of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly to Perform His New GRAMMY-Nominated Album Velvet Portraits
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Groundbreaking recording artist and producer Terrace Martin will kick-off Baldwin Hills Crenshaw's 70th Anniversary celebration with a free performance on Saturday, February 4.
Martin, coming off his acclaimed collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on the multi-GRAMMY award-winning To Pimp a Butterfly, will perform selections from his GRAMMY-nominated Velvet Portraits album. With Velvet Portraits, Martin, a Los Angeles native influenced by jazz and West Coast hip hop, creates a sonic love-letter to the city of Los Angeles. The Jonah Levine Collective, a re-imagined, modern jazz group will open for Martin and further celebrate this fusion of old and new.
Martin's Velvet Portraits, featuring G-Funk, R&B, and jazz, and inspired by Los Angeles' rich music history, is a fitting opening to Baldwin Hills Crenshaw's 70th anniversary celebration. South LA, known as the Harlem of the West for the key role it played in the birth of the jazz era, has been the epicenter of Los Angeles' vibrant art and music landscape since the 1930s. Since its opening 70 years ago, Baldwin Hills Crenshaw has continued to play a vital role in the arts and music scene, holding free community concerts featuring chart-topping artists, many who have roots in the surrounding community. Baldwin Hills Crenshaw's 70th anniversary celebration will feature free music and cultural, community events throughout 2017.
