BandagedEar.com Uncovers How Men and Women Appreciate Art Differently

DELRAY BEACH, Fla., July 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The art web site www.bandagedear.com has surveyed more than 700 Internet users, asking them to rate artworks from one to five stars. The analysis of this data shows that men and women usually agree on art, but there are a few distinct differences.

Francois Buchs, co-founder of BandagedEar.com, said, "The survey is made of the 27 most famous artists, each represented by dozens of artworks." He went on to explain, "Some of the discoveries were expected, but many artists believed to be well-loved were actually disliked or controversial."

Both genders agree on the top five most-liked artists: Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, M.C. Escher, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. They also unite in their lukewarm appreciation of Diego Rivera, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Keith Haring and Henri Matisse.

Not everyone has the same taste in art. Some artists, such as Mark Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky and Joan Miro, are very controversial and evoked strong feelings of like or dislike, regardless of gender. However, the controversy is sometimes clearly marked by gender.

Males prefer the majestic and lush landscapes of painter Albert Bierstadt and the black-and-white photography of Ansel Adams. Women tend to like Art Nouveau artworks and illustrations from the end of the 19th century. Artists such as Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec resonate with women more often than men.

Men love "Sierra Nevada" by Albert Bierstadt, but women rate it as average. Women love "Tournee du Chat Noir" by Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen, but men rate it as average.
