NEW YORK, Dec. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:
Bariatric Surgery: Global Markets for Services and Devices
BARIATRIC SURGERY
Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery is a generic term commonly used for the variety of processes that deal with the surgical treatment of obesity. These procedures could be invasive or less/noninvasive (endoluminal) and performed in both open and laparoscopic types. Bariatric surgery helps to accomplish continuous weight loss by either reducing the size of the stomach to reduce food intake with an implanted medical device (gastric band or intragastric balloon) or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy) or by resecting and rerouting the small intestines to a small stomach pouch to reduce nutrient absorption (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch). Bariatric surgery is more effective for achieving weight loss than nonsurgical management in people with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30 kg/m2 as well as those with more severe obesity and weight loss is more likely to be maintained in the longer term. Bariatric surgery is not only limited to patients with severe obesity, but it is considered an appropriate treatment for people with type 2 diabetes and obesity as well those who are not achieving recommended treatment targets with medical therapies, especially when there are other major comorbidities.
According to the BCC estimates, more than 350,000 procedures have been performed worldwide. Gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, intragastric balloons and gastric banding are the common procedures performed globally.
STUDY BACKGROUND
With a rapid increase in the population suffering from the problem of obesity and related comorbidities, there is a critical and growing need for new and improved treatments for obesity. Obesity also represents a tremendous cost burden to health care systems around the world. Due to this rapid increase in the obese population, the number of bariatric surgeries carried out on a global scale is also increasing continuously, and this increase has created a multimillion market for the specialized devices and instruments used for these bariatric procedures. They typically include stapling devices, trocars, gastric bands, gastric balloons, and other surgical instruments and accessories.
Because the acceptance of bariatric surgery is increasing so rapidly, there is a pressing need to develop an up-to-date base of market information to better understand the dynamics of the bariatric surgery market for services and devices.
This report is the first edition to cover the bariatric surgery market, key growth areas and quantitative market projections for services and devices. The increasing incidence of obesity and rising concern of people toward their health is boosting the bariatric surgery market, but on the other hand, limited insurance coverage and the elective nature of bariatric surgery limits the growth prospects. This study provides management readers the information and analysis they need to deal with these challenges.
STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
This study meets these needs by analyzing global markets for bariatric surgery devices (see SCOPE OF THE REPORT below for a definition of these devices) in light of the most recent available information. In addition to looking at current and future markets, the study will analyze technological, demographic and economic developments that may have a long-term impact on the size and structure of the bariatric surgery market for services and devices.
This report also provides an analysis of the bariatric surgery market for services and devices by type of surgical procedure and region. The future of bariatric surgery also will be discussed, with forecasts for consumption of specific product segments.
More specific objectives are to:
• Identify and segment the main types of bariatric procedures and relevant device types that have been commercialized to date.
• Analyze the historical and current procedure volume and value of devices consumed in procedures by geographic markets.
• Identify and evaluate the impact of demographic, economic and other factors that will drive future demand for the bariatric surgery market for services and devices.
• Forecast the volume and value of procedure types by the probabilities that future demand will be higher or lower than the baseline forecast.
• Identify promising new surgical procedures and products still in the development and testing stage, and assess the probability they will be commercialized successfully in the next five years.
• Forecast the potential market for these developmental procedures and products, taking into account the estimated probability they will be commercialized.
• Identify leading device manufacturers and analyze the structure of the bariatric surgery devices industry (e.g., market shares, concentration, and recent merger and acquisition activity).
• Assess the long-term outlook for bariatric surgery devices, taking into account market opportunities, as well as technological, financial and economic factors.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
The report has been written for the bariatric surgery interest community, but is especially tailored for readers with an interest in the marketing and management dimensions of bariatric surgery services and devices. This especially includes readers in:
• The medical and surgical devices industry.
• Medical research institutions.
• The investment community.
• The financial and analyst community.
SCOPE OF THE REPORT

• Detailed study around diseases like obesity and diabetes.
• Major types of bariatric procedures (gastric bypass, gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy), complications and relevant devices (e.g., implanted devices, gastric removal devices and gastric bypass devices).
• Procedure trends and cost estimates (one-time procedure cost excluding follow-up outpatient monitoring cost).
• Regulatory structure.
• Market characterization, unmet need, market size and segmentation, including historical data on sales by application, product type, end-user group and geographical market.
• Market drivers and restraints.
• Detailed market projections through 2018.
• Competition and market shares.
• Reimbursement.
• Marketed and pipeline (R&D) products along with description, regulatory status and clinical trials.
• Observations and conclusions regarding the future of bariatric surgery market for services and devices.
• Profiles of market participants and associations.
METHODOLOGY AND INFORMATION SOURCES
The findings and conclusions of this report are based on information gathered from manufacturers and users of bariatric surgery devices, as well as other informed sources. Interview data were combined with information gathered from an extensive review of secondary sources, such as trade publications, trade associations, company literature and online databases, to produce the market estimates contained in this report.
The base year for analysis and projection is 2012. At the time this report was prepared (early 2013), year-end data for 2012 were not yet universally available. Where necessary, market estimates for 2012 were developed using interim (partial) data for 2012, combined with historical data for 2011.
With 2012 as a baseline, market projections were developed for 2013 to 2018. These projections are based on a consensus of primary contacts combined with BCC Research's understanding of the key market drivers and their impact from a historical and analytical perspective. The analytical methodologies used to generate the market estimates are described in the section on Detailed Market Projections.
All dollar projections presented in this report are in 2012 constant dollars.
