BALTIMORE, April 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Under Armour (NYSE:UA), the Baltimore, MD-based leader in sports performance apparel, footwear and accessories, announced today amulti-year partnership with Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. As the newest member of the Under Armour family, Harper will wear Under Armour cleats and apparel during games and will be featured in various in-store and advertising promotional campaigns.
The 18 year-old Harper, the first player selected in the 2010 MLB Draft, has already generated strong acclaim in the baseball world. Owning a rare combination of power and athleticism, Harper complements his exploits at the plate and in the field with a 96 mile per hour fastball. In addition to being the 2010 Golden Spikes Award winner, Harper also holds the record for the longest home run in the history of Tropicana Field, after he launched a 502-foot drive during the 2009 High School Power Showcase.
"While Bryce Harper's raw talent is impressive, it is his hunger for greatness and his commitment to training that have put him on a trajectory for great success," said Matt Mirchin, Senior Vice President, Sports Marketing, Under Armour. "Bryce is an electrifying athlete, and we look forward to partnering with him as he begins his professional career and as he helps carry the torch for the next generation of Under Armour athletes."
The signing of Harper further expands Under Armour's collection of championship athletic talent, including three-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady and World Series Champion and NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey. Under Armour's baseball roster also features fellow Washington National Ryan Zimmerman, Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters and New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, among others.
"I'm excited to join the Under Armour family, which has shown such a strong commitment to helping young baseball players – and elite athletes in multiple sports – elevate their games," said Harper. "I admire Under Armour's dedication to training and their desire to be the best. Their apparel and footwear are second to none, which makes this partnership a great fit."
After joining the Nationals organization in August 2010, Harper led the Scottsdale Scorpions to the Arizona Fall League Championship, becoming the second-youngest player in AFL history.
