BASIS Independent Manhattan Set to Open in 2017
It's the 5th private school, and 2nd in New York City, from America's leading educational network
NEW YORK, March 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- BASIS Independent Manhattan, the newest private school from the nationally ranked, world acclaimed BASIS.ed network, will open to students in the fall of 2017.
BASIS Independent Manhattan will be located on the Upper West Side and serve students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The school will enroll students beginning this summer, and the campus will have a maximum building capacity of 450 students. Graduates of BASIS Independent Manhattan, which will be BASIS.ed's second New York City campus, will matriculate into BASIS Independent Brooklyn, the PreK – 12th grade institution located in Red Hook that opened to acclaim in 2014.
BASIS Independent Schools was drawn to Manhattan as part of its natural growth and progression. "Our new campus will be surrounded by many of the longest-standing and most reputable private schools in the country," BASIS Independent CEO Ian Block said. "We look forward to being in such good company and offering our academic program that is utterly distinct: blending the rigorous standards and foundational disciplinary study of the best of European and Asian education with the ingenuity and creativity of American education at its finest and most innovative."
The BASIS Independent academic program is unique in that it is internationally benchmarked, which is vital in the 21st century global marketplace. Block continued, "Our flagship schools are already thriving in two of the most creative and demanding educational markets in the nation, Silicon Valley and Brooklyn. Our expansion is evidence of the demand for a new status quo of independent school education. Urban dwellers are truly evaluating what their tuition dollars are doing for them. They're seeking a program rooted in innovation, high expectations, and transparency, not to mention a lower price point and no pressure to fundraise."
Of note:
- This will be the fifth school in the BASIS Independent system, after Brooklyn and Silicon Valley (opened 2014), and Fremont, California and McLean, Virginia (opening 2016). BASIS.ed currently manages these independent schools, as well as twenty high-performing charter schools in Arizona, Texas, and Washington, D.C. Last year, in Shenzhen, China, BASIS.ed also opened its first international school.
- BASIS Independent Manhattan will use the identical elementary and middle school academic programs as BASIS Independent Brooklyn, which has been lauded for offering Mandarin and engineering classes from kindergarten; for its hands-on, project-based "Connections" class linking the arts, science, math, and humanities; and for its vibrant array of fine, visual, and performing arts and music coursework.
- BASIS Independent Schools is in the final stages of securing the campus, and the new school's precise Manhattan location should be released by early summer 2016.
