Hematology analyzers discussed in this market include low-volume and high-volume systems. Low- volume systems, commonly found in decentralized labs, smaller commercial labs, physician office labs (POLs) and other near patient clinics, are three-part differentials and compact in size with cell counting as their primary function. High-volume analyzers, found in core labs and large reference labs, include additional parameters and typically have microscopy or image-processing capabilities.
The high-volume analyzer market is at a mature stage due to extended life spans and improved durability of the systems; growth opportunities, however, exist in the low-volume segment, particularly in the POL market, due to the emergence of the outcomes-based health care delivery, which is resulting in higher volumes of testing being done during the patient visits owing to the advantages of early detection and timely treatment.

Consequently, rates paid by CMS and private insurance players may not account for the higher costs to perform the tests in POLs and smaller clinics.
