The possible link between prescription testosterone treatments like AndroGel and the risk for serious cardiovascular events most recently made headlines in January 2014, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Drug Safety Communication alerting the public of its plans to conduct a safety review of the drugs. Although this FDA notification came at the heels of research that lent evidence to the possibility that certain prescription testosterone therapies may cause strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular events, no concrete conclusions regarding the association have been reached.

Testosterone Treatment Lawsuits

Starting in November 2013, concerns about certain testosterone treatments allegedly causing heart problems have continued to grow. The Journal of the American Medical System published a study that month finding that older men with pre-existing heart conditions may be at an increased risk for strokes, heart attacks and other heart problems. This conclusion was later followed up in January 2014 when research published in PLOS One showed that younger men with pre-existing heart problems may be at a doubled risk for suffering heart attacks caused by testosterone treatment therapies, as were all men over the age of 65.

Since the FDA alert was issued last month, four AndroGel lawsuit claims alleging injuries caused by the drug have been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. These cases accuse the testosterone treatment's manufacturer of using direct-to-consumer advertising to create demand for its product, which is often prescribed to treat fatigue, low libido, and other symptoms associated with aging. Prescribing AndroGel to men with normal levels of testosterone may be considered an off-label use, according to claims, as the testosterone treatment is only approved by the FDA to treat low levels of testosterone in patients with another medical condition.
