Better Baseball Teams with Uganda Little League and Donates Equipment for Hundreds of Children in East Africa
MARIETTA, Ga., Aug. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Better Baseball, the largest distributor of baseball equipment in the southeast, announced Tuesday that it is partnering with the coaches of Uganda's Little League Baseball team to provide baseball equipment that will support hundreds of children in East Africa.
Immediately after hearing of Uganda's denial to participate in their first Little League World Series, Adam Kopley and Sterling Pace of Better Baseball saw an opportunity to make a difference. They contacted Nick Goldfarb, the producer of the soon-to-be-released documentary that examines baseballs effect on the youth of Uganda, to offer hospitality that would ultimately extend across the globe. "I knew we could help to encourage this relatively new sport in Uganda, especially during these challenging times," said Kopley. Glen Robinson, founder and CEO of Better Baseball, added, "this is simply who we are and it certainly supports the values that I founded Better Baseball on so many years ago. We constantly strive to support our community and now we have just expanded the definition of, our community."
Due to inconsistencies with the team's visa applications, Uganda's Little League baseball players were recently denied access to travel to America for The Little League World Series, which began on August 19th. "The players were very disappointed in the decision of our State Department and that was certainly understandable, especially considering their surprise victory over Saudi Arabia during the qualifying tournament," stated Sterling Pace, National Sales Director of Better Baseball. "Many of these children play baseball without equipment, some play barefoot and catch the ball without a glove, you can't say these kids are not enthusiastic about baseball," he added.
Better Baseball's entire team has donated their evenings to packing boxes to send to the Ugandan Little Leaguers. Hundreds of gloves, bats, balls, catcher's gear, and field equipment have already been packed. "There is enough baseball gear going over there to equip an entire park," stated David Shuford, General Manager. "But the amazing part of all of this is how our local baseball community has jumped in to assist us." Little Leaguers all over Atlanta are writing letters of encouragement and filling them with baseball cards. These inspiring letters and cards will be included in the shipment. Mr. Shuford added with a laugh, "who knows, this could be the beginning of transatlantic baseball card trading."
