Bingham Hires Apple General Counsel, Expands Corporate Practice in Silicon Valley
Daniel Cooperman, Former Apple General Counsel and Oracle General Counsel, Rejoins Bingham
EAST PALO ALTO, Calif., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Bingham has expanded its corporate practice in Northern California with the addition of Daniel Cooperman, former senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Apple Inc. and Oracle Corporation, to its Silicon Valley office.
Rejoining Bingham as of counsel, Cooperman will focus on corporate and transactional matters as well as on regional, national and international growth strategies for the firm. Before joining Oracle as general counsel in 1997 and Apple as general counsel in 2007, Cooperman was chair of the Business & Transactions Group and managing partner of the San Jose office for then-McCutchen Doyle Brown & Enersen, which combined in 2002 with Bingham Dana to create Bingham McCutchen, now a global firm with 1,100 lawyers in the United States, United Kingdom and Asia.
"Dan is an outstanding addition to our firm and a respected leader throughout the global business and legal communities," said Bingham Chairman, Jay S. Zimmerman. "Given his roles at two of the world's most innovative companies, Dan will add immediate value for our clients."
In addition to practicing in Bingham's Corporate Area, Cooperman will help lead Bingham's growth strategy in Northern California, said Bill Abrams, managing partner of Bingham's Silicon Valley office and co-chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Group.
"Dan's unmatched insight into what makes the region tick and the deep relationships he's forged in the community during his long career is a significant advantage for us," said Abrams, adding that Silicon Valley leads the nation in the number of high-tech companies with approximately 4,500.
Bingham's and Cooperman's history in Silicon Valley dates back nearly 30 years, when he and the firm opened the firm's first office in San Jose in 1981. Bingham's many Silicon Valley clients include Hewlett Packard, Intel, Oracle, SanDisk and Stanford University said Abrams.
"It's great to be back," said Cooperman, noting that the firm's global footprint and growth strategy was very appealing to him. "The breadth of Bingham's global platform and its deep bench of talent are best-in-class. I look forward to once again being part of the Bingham team."
As Apple's general counsel, Cooperman reported to Apple CEO Steve Jobs and led Apple's legal department, overseeing worldwide legal policies, corporate governance, securities compliance, commercial licensing, intellectual property, employment law, litigation, patent law, mergers and acquisitions, and legal support for Apple's various business units. Cooperman also managed Apple's Government Affairs and Global Security departments. Before Apple, Cooperman served as general counsel of Oracle Corporation for nearly 11 years.
A graduate of Dartmouth College and Stanford University's Graduate School of Business and School of Law, receiving both his M.B.A. and J.D. from Stanford, Cooperman is the immediate past president of the Association of General Counsel and is on the Advisory Council for the Law, Science and Technology Program at Stanford Law School. He also serves as a strategic adviser to Institutional Venture Partners.
