BIOSforum: Brazil Fosters Debate, Ushering in a New Phase in the Discussion of Sustainable Growth

SAO PAULO, May 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Sustainable growth has now become a matter of everyday discussion in the worldwide agenda. In Latin America's largest country, accelerated and increasing development, together with its wealth of natural resources, make the issue even more pressing. In this context, a major step has been taken this past 25th and 26th of May with the holding of the BIOSforum (Brazil: investments in Sustainable Opportunities) – sponsored by the National Federation of Associations of Sales and Marketing Managers of Brazil [FENADVB - Federacao Nacional das Associacoes dos Dirigentes de Vendas e Marketing do Brasil], in Sao Paulo.

The event brought together governors of Brazil's states, journalists, specialists in sustainability, businessmen and distinguished members of government. The programming featured such names Geraldo Alckmin, Governor of Sao Paulo, Edison Lobao, Minister of Mines and Energy, Corrado Clini, Director General of Italy's Ministry of the Environment, and Vice President Michel Temer.

For the Vice-President, the event provided the consolidation of a social compact on behalf of Brazilian society. "This is a forum of life. We should always encourage these initiatives.  Democracy is very compatible with development. I see people willing to talk about Brazil in an optimistic fashion.  In recent years, Brazilians have won their self-esteem," Temer affirms.  

For Brazil, the BIOSforum has been more than timely. The event, which took place two days after the approval of the Forestry Code in the National Congress, also brought into the discussion federal deputy Aldo Rebelo, sponsor of the bill.  

And if this first edition of the BIOSforum has already yielded good results in these matters, the event's director general, Marcelo Medeiros, prefers to characterize it as a platform. He points out that the BIOSforum is not a single, one-time event. The aim is to hold the gathering on a recurring basis.  "Up until now, no nation has brought together government officials and businessmen for two days to plan the country's sustainable growth, such that, in doing so, Brazil is offering an example to the entire world. What's more, each time the event takes place, new investment opportunities can arise for the states, enriching and enhancing the initiatives already under way," Medeiros notes.
