Boilermakers Make Job Sites Safe and Save Money for Contractors and Owners
KANSAS CITY, Kan., Oct. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers announced today that programs developed under MOST (Mobilization, Optimization, Stabilization and Training) elevate the performance of Boilermaker craftsmen, and generate millions of dollars annually in cost savings for contractor and owner communities. MOST is the training and safety arm of the organization.
Hazardous working conditions are a major expense for any project. While union-trained craftsmen command higher compensation than nonunion workers, they consistently provide greater value to a project because their training helps employers avoid costly accidents and injuries. MOST safety programs have reduced lost-time injury rates for union Boilermakers by 90 percent.
MOST programs solve safety and other industry issues by providing contractors and owners a competitive edge known as The Boilermaker Advantage, a performance standard that can be readily measured. For example, welding certification costs have dropped by 95 percent since implementing the MOST Common Arc Program and 98 percent of drug-screening tests conducted by the MOST Substance Abuse Program come back clean.
"Unsafe work environments cost money and can sometimes cost lives," said Roger Erickson, Administrator of MOST. "Safe job sites are always a priority for Boilermakers and our members complete comprehensive safety training before they arrive at any job. This training removes the hidden gamble of hiring someone who may not work safely, which results in significant cost savings for our owners and contractors."
In 2014, the Boilermakers extended this commitment to safety to include job site attitudes and actions. Called The Boilermaker Code, this program sets a clear direction on job site conduct and declares the expectation for excellence.
Seventeen distinct programs contribute to The Boilermaker Advantage. They promote safe work practices; build proficiencies in rigging, steel erection, and scaffolding; ensure member skills are at the highest level; create highly qualified field leaders through leadership and project management training; hold job site actions accountable; and promote the readiness and availability of the Boilermaker work force.
