NEW YORK, June 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:
Book Retailing on the Internet 2013
Executive Summary
The phenomenon of Internet shopping has changed the dynamics of many consumer markets significantly over the last decade; it has greatly altered people's buying habits. The increasing popularity of shopping online has occurred as a result of the many benefits the Internet has to offer, from a greater variety of products and retailers through to the often lower prices available online compared with traditional bricks-and-mortar stores. Internet shopping has reached a new height within the UK over the past 5 years, with over two-thirds of the population now shopping online.
Specialised e-commerce booksellers were some of the first to enter the online market, predominately through the launch of Amazon, which initially specialised in distributing books. While Amazon has since ventured into most other consumer markets, there remain some specialist online booksellers, as well as bricks-and-mortar sites; many traditional bookshops have established a presence online, in order to capitalise on the growing Internet shopping trend. Most recently, publishers themselves have entered the e-commerce market, selling their own titles directly to consumers. Most publishers have an online presence, as it is understood that without one, a company may struggle to successfully compete within the publishing industry.
Sales among e-commerce retailers are thought to have fared much better than those of traditional booksellers. Consumers are becoming increasingly price conscious with their non-essential spending; Internet booksellers often have lower prices than their high-street equivalents.
The introduction of e-readers to the mainstream in the UK in 2009 — and their subsequent rise to popularity — has also greatly benefitted the online selling market, as the coinciding e-books are downloaded directly onto the devices from online sellers. The leading competitors of e-readers and e-books include Amazon's Kindle and its Kindle store, and Apple's iPads and its iTunes and iBookstore. The digital trend has significantly helped the e-commerce market, but also brought new light to the book industry, helping it to move forward into the digital era.
Incentives to highlight the book industry have also been developed by many organisations and the Government. While many of these focus on reading for children, newer examples include World Book Night, launched in the UK in 2011, which intended to appeal to the entire population.
Currently, many other trends and factors are having an impact on the book industry, including the future of public libraries and their potential to adapt to the digital era, as well as many changes that are occurring to the education system, from a new National Curriculum to increasing university tuition fees.
The future of the e-commerce bookselling market is also examined within this Market Assessment. Despite predictions that the economy will remain fairly weak in the next 5 years, the online book market will be successful in maintaining sales. Many factors will influence the predicted growth, ranging from consumers using Internet retailers due to pricing issues through to a continued boom for e-books as the overall publishing industry continues to adapt to the digital phenomenon.
