Boulder Crest Retreat Opens to Wounded U.S. Military Near Washington, D.C.

BLUEMONT, Va., Sept. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boulder Crest Retreat, (http://www.bouldercrestretreat.org) the first-of-its-kind rural wellness center for wounded military warriors and their families, will celebrate its grand opening on Friday, September 6, just 60 miles outside of Washington, D.C. in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Retreat supplements outpatient treatment and rehabilitation to help wounded warriors reconnect and recover, and is in close proximity to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

In October of 2011 Ken Falke, a retired U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) expert and Master Chief Petty Officer, and his wife Julia Falke, announced a $10 million capital budget goal for a retreat to be built in Bluemont, Va. The Falkes donated 37 acres of land and imagined the Retreat as a home-away-from-home that would provide a rural refuge from the clinical setting many wounded warriors grow accustomed to during the recovery process.

Boulder Crest Retreat is incomparable to any existing facility available to recovering military and their families. The 37-acre rural Retreat is specifically created and built to support the needs of wounded warriors. The Retreat is available at no cost to the wounded and their families. The distinctive Retreat is made possible through funding and volunteer contributions from a variety of local and national corporations, nonprofit organizations and private citizens.

The Retreat is a first-class, ADA-accessible facility designed for privacy, space, proximity to nature and access to recreational activities that wounded warriors aren't able to experience during treatment. The Retreat has four cabins that can host up to six people each, for two to 14 day visits. Recreational and therapeutic activities include hiking, fishing, archery, yoga, and meditation onsite or at nearby locations. To book a stay, applicants must apply online and provide background information to help Retreat staff understand the warrior's needs during their visit.

On Sept.6, Boulder Crest Retreat will officially open to the community, with a public open house that will include cabin tours, recreational demonstrations, arts and crafts activities and live music.
