Boy Scouts of America Mark 100th Anniversary Celebration with 3-Day Outdoor Adventure
HOUSTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In celebration of the organization's 100th anniversary on October 8-10, 2010, the Sam Houston Area Council (SHAC) will build a temporary 400-acre Scout city called SHAC Jam, with over 20 neighborhoods of activities for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and the co-ed Venturing division for teens. Over 20,000 Scouts, leaders and families will attend. Themes inspired by the Scout Oath include Duty to Community, to God and to Country; also Physically Strong competitions and a tribute to Scouting history. Activities include such Scouting skills as shooting sports, outdoor cooking, crafts and high adventure. City "subdivisions" include an Indian Village, a Highland Village, a Space Camp, a Cowboy Camp, a Radio City and more. The Scout City will be complete with live entertainment, unit camping areas and worship services for various faiths. Starting Friday, Scouts will pitch thousands of tents for overnight camping.

On Saturday, October 9th, the events kick off with a 2 mile Fun Run at 7:00 a.m. Special guest, Gilian Clay, a great granddaughter of Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, will assist Cub Scouts with craft projects. Cub Scouts will enjoy four activity zones. The CUB-tastic Zone includes Zoomer rockets, a giant twister game, marble mazes. Around The World will feature soccer, Chinese Shuttlecock and Earthball. Safari will include a bouldering wall, wrist rockets and obstacle course. CUB-ology will showcase science themes including a foaminator and a worm farm. A closing ceremony will provide Cub Scouts with a young oak tree to plant at home to mark the next 100 years of Scouting.
A Guinness World Record attempt for the "Most Simultaneous Model Rockets Launched" will take place Saturday, October 9 at 1:00 p.m. The current world record is 965 rockets. The SHAC Jam event will have 3,200 rockets loaded onto 32 special launch platforms. Each Scout participant built and signed his special edition Estes SHAC Jam world attempt rocket prior to the launch.
Sunday worship services will include a Catholic service with His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo and a Mormon service with Elder Claudio R.M. Costa from Salt Lake City. Various faiths will be represented either Saturday or Sunday including Baptist, Buddhist, Jewish, Lutheran, Methodist, Muslim, Presbyterian and more.
