Brazoria County Launches Free Prescription Discount Card

ANGLETON, Texas, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- BetterRxCard, a free drug discount card program, was launched today throughout Brazoria County, Texas. The discount program, approved by the Commissioner's Court in September, is free for county residents and provides an average of 45% savings per prescription. The card program is uniquely designed to assist both uninsured and insured residents in lowering prescription drug costs.

Uninsured residents, those without any prescription drug insurance or whose insurance does not cover one or more drugs – an estimated 57,000 people – may use the card at most Brazoria County pharmacies, including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, and Medicine Shoppe. BetterRxCard may be used at these and 45 other participating pharmacies across the county.

"Residents of McLennan County, Texas, using the BetterRxCard for just over five months, have saved over $130,000," said David Smith, Marketing Director for Genuity Group. "The average savings is nearly 45%, and a typical cardholder saves over $35 each month using the discount card feature," he said.

The second card feature, called EquivaMeds, helps patients find lower cost options for expensive brand name drugs and then helps them work with their personal physician to see if a change is appropriate. This online, patent-pending process generates a report that has been approved by physicians 95% of the time and has identified an average $149 in monthly savings in McLennan County this year. Based on U.S. Census and Kaiser Family Foundation data, it is estimated that an additional 45,000 insured residents of Brazoria County have a monthly drug expense that might benefit from this feature.

Both features are free to Brazoria County residents.

There are two ways to obtain a free BetterRxCard. Card pickup locations are being established around the county at most county offices, library locations, and many pharmacies. The card may also be printed online at www.BetterRxCard.com/Brazoria, where additional information about the BetterRxCard may be found, including card pickup locations and participating pharmacies. Over 3900 pharmacies throughout the State of Texas and 60,000 across the U.S. currently participate.

Regardless of how a card is obtained, using one is easy. Cardholders simply show the card at the pharmacy counter, and the discount will be calculated and applied at checkout. Approximately 80% of all prescription drugs prescribed by a medical doctor will realize a discount.
