Breitling Announced as the Official Time Partner to Artliner's Opening Exhibition at the Iconic Wind Tunnels, Farnborough

Breitling is delighted to be supporting the first public opening of the historic wind tunnels. The exhibition marks a new era for the wind tunnels which were originally used for speed and transonic testing of aircraft. For over 60 years the wind tunnels played an instrumental role in the development of many legendary British aircraft including the 1942 Hawker Typhoon, the Bristol Bulldog, the Spitfire in 1942 and 1943 and more recently Concorde. Records also confirm that a 1957 Bentley underwent significant testing.

Breitling's status as official supplier to the world of aviation first came about with the RAF in the 1930s; with the development of on-board chronograph for use in prop-driven fighter planes during WWII. Further developments in watchmaking were made with the first wrist-worn chronograph for pilots and this set the scene for launch of the iconic Navitimer in 1952; as a model equipped with a circular slide-rule able to measure average speed and productivity rate, it was soon named the official watch of the AOPA (Airline Owners and Pilots Association).
In 1984 Breitling designed and launched the Chronomat watch in conjunction with the Frecce Tricolori (Italian Air Force display team); featuring a number of practical and functional characteristics the watch was greeted by pilots across the globe. The brand celebrates 30 years of the Chronomat this year with the launch of a special edition series called Airborne.
Artliner, the driving force behind the project stages art experiences around the world, and brings unique art projects to international and local audiences alike. Working in conjunction with the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust, curator Salman Tuqan has commissioned two artists to bring the wind tunnels to life: Thor McIntyre-Burnie intends to re-activate these spaces via a series of sonic and sculptural interventions alongside James Bridle who uses aircraft satellite mapping to create a sensory experience for visitors.
The exhibition will run from 9th June to 20th July 2014, culminating with a fly-by by the RAF Red Arrows, who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. Breitling's long standing relationship with the Red Arrows began in the early 1990's but Breitling's passion for flying dates back to the earliest days of aviation.
