Brekford Corp. Becomes Vendor for Baltimore's Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement Program Effective January 1, 2013

HANOVER, Md., Jan. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Brekford Corp. (OTCBB, OTCQB: "BFDI")("Brekford" or "the Company"), a leading provider of public safety technology and automated traffic enforcement solutions, vehicle upfitting, and rugged mobile technology, today announced that it became the official vendor for Baltimore's Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System ("ATVES") effective January 1, 2013, in accordance with the terms of its contract with the City of Baltimore.  The Company was selected from among three finalists, including Xerox State and Local Solutions, Inc. and Redflex Holdings.  Maintenance of Baltimore's ATVES was the responsibility of Xerox State and Local Solutions, Inc. during the years 2004-2012.

Baltimore's ATVES program consists of 70 fixed-location speed cameras, 81 red light cameras, and 8 portable speed cameras that are owned by the City.  Whereas the City operates the ATVES as a whole and retains full final authority over the decision on whether red light or speed violation citations should be issued, Brekford will be responsible for servicing all equipment; replacements, upgrades and additional units; violation processing services; and any and all support services necessary for the City to operate an effective and dependable ATVES.

To assure the greatest accuracy and operating efficiency of its ATVES, the City of Baltimore expects to continue operating many of its speed cameras while phasing in Brekford's newer speed camera technology, which incorporates the latest state-of-the-art tracking radar hardware and software capabilities.  Such equipment upgrades will occur during a 90-day "transition period" that commenced January 1, 2013.  The new speed camera systems to be provided by Brekford are also known as photographic speed monitoring systems and use special equipment to automatically measure the speed of vehicles and produce photos of the rear license plates of those that are violating speed limits.  A study by the Chochrane Collaboration for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ("IIHS") concluded that this type of speed enforcement technology has been instrumental in reducing injurious and fatal crashes by as much as 58 percent.

Automated red light enforcement systems operate in a similar manner to reduce the incidence of "T-bone" and other types of accidents that are considered among the most dangerous in urban traffic environments.  Initially, the City expects to continue utilizing the red light cameras that were previously installed as part of its ATVES, but Brekford has plans to upgrade them over the contract period.
