NEW YORK, July 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The first umbrella rental company has launched a pilot program at a downtown NYC co-working space. For $2.50, 'brellaBox allows New Yorkers to rent a high-quality umbrella, from a specially engineered automated two-way vending machine. Individuals have up to 16 hours to return the umbrella, whose return is tracked with proprietary software technology.
New Yorkers face rain an average of just over 10 days every month. In a city pressed for time, 'brellaBox may be a perfect fusion of convenience and environmental friendliness.
NYC-based entrepreneurs John O'Connor and Anusha Kambhampaty worked to bring 'brellaBox to life to make it easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly for New Yorkers to stay dry. "I was tired of getting caught in the rain without an umbrella," says Mr. O'Connor, and he's betting the rest of Manhattan feels the same way. He's also keen to curb the waste of cheap umbrellas. "People forget their umbrellas at home and buy one for a few bucks, then it breaks right away. You end up with tons of broken umbrellas left all over the streets and filling garbage cans. It's a tremendous waste of resources"
'brellaBox makes its debut at WeWork Charging Bull at 25 Broadway in Manhattan with plans to expand across NYC and beyond. Totes Isotoner supplied umbrellas for the launch. The TRX TITAN Umbrella can withstand winds up to 70 MPH winds and is made from Scotchgard™ Water Resistance fabric with SunGuard™ UPF 50+sun protection.
