Brian Spitz, President of Big State Home Buyers, Discusses Problems and Solutions Facing Houston Homeowners When Selling A House With Back Taxes Owed

HOUSTON, Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Brian Spitz, founder and President of Big State Home Buyers, a Houston Real Estate Firm specializing in purchasing distressed properties, was interviewed on "The Price of Business" radio show about issues Houston homeowners may face when selling their house if they owe back property taxes. 

In the interview Brian Spitz explains how property tax liens are treated differently and have priority over other personal debts, such as delinquent mortgage payments, credit card charge offs and child support liens.  Brian states, "A lot of those can be negotiated, but the one thing that cannot be negotiated is your property taxes."  He advises homeowners to work with property tax entities and setup payment plans if they fall behind. 

A house transferred through an estate can present challenges that may not be obvious to those inheriting the property. Over 65 or Homestead tax exemptions won't pass through to the person inheriting the home. Mr. Spitz explained, "It's important that you notify the tax entities that the person has passed away."  The owner of an inherited property could face penalties and interest when they try and sell the house and the tax entities remove the exemption from the time the property was inherited.

Brian encourages homeowners not to ignore back property tax issues because it's something they are going to have to deal with sooner or later. He goes on to say, "We buy properties from people all the time who have gotten behind in their property taxes, and sometimes they get to us too late and they're so far behind we can't help. But a lot of times we're able to stop tax foreclosure and move forward with buying their property, getting them some cash out of it."
