BringMeTheNews Wins SPJ Page One Award for Best Newscast for Second Consecutive Year
MINNEAPOLIS, June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- BringMeTheNews (BMTN), the pioneering online and broadcast news curator, won the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists' Page One Award for Best Radio Newscast in the state. BMTN also took second place in the same category, followed by Minnesota Public Radio, which took third place.
This is the second consecutive year that BMTN has earned the top award. Broadcasters from around the state submitted individual newscasts that were judged by SPJ members in other states. According to the judges, BMTN offered "a clear, easy-to-understand newscast that energetically tells listeners what's happening and points them toward sources to get more information if they want it."
The first place radio newscast developed by BMTN founder Rick Kupchella included stories about Minneapolis recruiting volunteer crime fighters, backlash over Target Corp.'s political donations and an update on a billboard that became a national story. The second place newscast zeroed in on the tight race for Minnesota governor the day after the election.
"We are extremely honored to be recognized a second time by the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists in this category," Kupchella said. "BMTN has clearly found a news delivery system that appeals to listeners and online users, and we are thrilled that BMTN also resonates with journalists. Receiving these awards is a real testament to the dedicated, fast-growing staff we have at BringMeTheNews."
The SPJ Page One Awards are awarded annually. The winners were announced at the Page One Awards Banquet in St. Paul Tuesday night. The SPJ awards the prizes based on criteria such as presentation, context, writing and effectiveness.
Established in 2009 by Kupchella, a former investigative reporter and TV news anchor, BMTN gathers local news from hundreds of online sources and distributes it through a network of online and social media sites. BMTN is also broadcast on nearly three dozen radio stations throughout Minnesota more than 1,600 times a week.
The company recently established a sports division and a business page at BringMeTheNews.com, and continues to explore additional ways to expand its reach.
