British Invasion! BabyNames.com Announces the Top Baby Names of 2013

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The leading web service for naming your infant has tallied up the most popular names of the year and the winners are Liam and Charlotte for the second year in a row.

"It's a British invasion," says BabyNames founder, Jennifer Moss. "The baby names on the top of the U.S. charts now—like Charlotte, Olivia, and Liam—were the leading names in England a decade ago."

Moss attributes the trend to the increase in British entertainment in the U.S. "We've had an influx of Brit actors in the past ten years in Hollywood, not to mention popular movies and TV series," she says. "There's Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, Dr. Who, Sherlock Holmes, to name a few. The U.S. has seen a new wave of Anglophilia, which has worked its way into baby names as well."

But one name climbing the charts quickly is most definitely American: Lincoln. "It is the fastest rising name this year," Moss says. "Lincoln jumped from #99 to #59 in just one year. When a name climbs that fast, it means it's headed for the top ten. It's even crossing genders!" Moss refers to celebrity couple Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell, who named their newborn daughter Lincoln last March.

And although the popularity of the name George is predicted to increase in Great Britain due to the new royal baby, Moss doubts it will appear on the top twenty in the U.S. anytime soon. "Perhaps in ten years the U.S. will see more Georges, but right now there are so many varied associations, good and bad, that it probably won't be popular anytime soon."
