Hosted by the School's Center for Health Sector Management and Policy on Jan. 17, 2014, the conference, The Business of Health Care: Bending the Cost Curve, will address such issues as the impact of changes in the U.S. health care system on employers in 2014 and beyond; benefits, costs, politics and policy related to the transformation; and the impact of changes on health care providers.
"This timely conference is the perfect showcase for an open and informative conversation about containing the high costs of health care and creating value in our health care system," said Donna E. Shalala, president of the University of Miami and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. "At a time when implementation of a significant phase of the Affordable Care Act is occurring, we are bringing together an array of speakers and panelists to share their thoughts on these important issues," added Shalala, who will participate in the conference as a moderator.
Conference Speakers Include:
- Olympia Snowe, Former U.S. Senator (R-Maine) and Senior Fellow, Bipartisan Policy Center (Keynote Speaker)
- Alice Rivlin, Director, Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform, Leonard D. Schaeffer Chair in Health Policy Studies, and Senior Fellow, Economic Studies, Brookings Institution, and Former Director, Congressional Budget Office
- Diane Rowland, Executive Vice President, Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation
- Michael Freed, Executive Vice President, Corporate Resources and Chief Financial Officer, Spectrum Health, and President and CEO, Priority Health
- James M. Winkler, Senior Vice President, Innovation Leader, U.S. Health & Benefits, AON Hewitt
"The conference will provide a unique opportunity for professionals across industries to learn a great deal more about how the transformation of our health care system will impact organizations across sectors," said Steven Ullmann, director of the Center for Health Sector Management and Policy at the University of Miami School of Business Administration. "We expect much of the discussion to center around 'value' because a focus on value will be required of businesses, health care providers and the government if the goals of health care reform are to be achieved."
The conference is expected to draw those working within the industries of health care, health care delivery and health care policy and administration, as well as business leaders and other professionals in the finance, technology, legal, marketing, government and public policy, and academic sectors. The conference is presented by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Florida Blue. The early registration deadline is November 20. More information can be found at http://bus.miami.edu/healthcare2014.
