CAIR Condemns Trump's 'Full-On Racist' Tweet About Massacre of Native Americans

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned what it called a "full-on racist" tweet by President Trump that used a massacre of Native Americans by U.S. soldiers as a punchline to attack his political rival.

Last night, Trump tweeted: "If Elizabeth Warren, often referred to by me as Pocahontas, did this commercial from Bighorn or Wounded Knee instead of her kitchen, with her husband dressed in full Indian garb, it would have been a smash!"

Hundreds of Sioux men, women and children were killed or injured at the Wounded Knee massacre. In 1990, Congress expressed its "deep regret on behalf of the United States" for the killings.

Trump has often used the racist slur "Pocahontas" to attack Warren. In the tweet, Trump's references to "full Indian garb" and "Bighorn" are used to ridicule Native American history, heritage and culture.

In a statement, CAIR said:

"Any employee -- from an administrative assistant to a CEO -- who used a company account to post such a full-on racist message would immediately be fired. Yet we have an occupant of the Oval Office who routinely uses racist slurs and dog whistles, and promotes racist, white supremacist and Islamophobic policies, all while avoiding accountability of any kind.

"History will not be kind to those who stood silent as our nation's values were degraded by an individual who demonstrates on a daily basis that he is unfit for the office he holds." 

Trump's racist tweet comes just days after CAIR called on the Republican Party to eject Rep. Steve King (R-IA) for comments in support of white supremacism.

Following the Wounded Knee tweet, Trump posted two messages quoting from an overtly racist column by Pat Buchanan claiming that the Democratic Party is "hostile to white men because the smaller the share of the U.S. population that white men become, the sooner that Democrats inherit the national estate."

In that column, Buchanan wrote in part: "The only way to greater 'diversity,' the golden calf of the Democratic Party, is to increase the number of women, African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics, and thereby reduce the number of white men."
