When relocating from Austin to Malibu, Styles sought to create a home that felt comfortable and inviting and could accommodate everyday family life, from kids and pets to sand, dirt and the occasional spill. Finding rugs in the right dimensions was equally important, particularly in the home's square-shaped rooms, where standard sizes weren't an ideal fit. Ernesta's made-to-order approach allowed her to tailor each rug to its space while adding texture and softness throughout the home.

Styles considered 10 rug samples before choosing five designs, comparing colors, materials and textures against the home's finishes and furnishings. In the media room, a custom 13-by-13-foot Xander rug in Cedar adds contrast to an oatmeal-colored sectional, while Cormac in Oatmeal brings texture to the primary bedroom's minimal, neutral palette.

Her children also had a say in the rugs chosen for their bedrooms. Her son's room features Maycomb in Linen, a lighter style that contrasts with the room's darker palette, while her daughter chose Sugar in Cream for its soft, plush texture.
