Canadian Cricket Protein Company Launches on Kickstarter
Canadian Start-up, Coast Protein, hits their $20,000 Kickstarter goal in less than 72 Hours.
VANCOUVER, March 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ - Coast Protein, Western Canada's first cricket protein company launched their crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter and hit their goal in less than 72 hours. The company plans to scale production, improve packaging, and add cricket protein powders for smoothies to their product offering.
The Vancouver start-up currently sells small-batch cricket protein bars to various retailers across British Columbia. Available in two flavours: Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Raisin, Coast Protein locally produces around 1,000 cricket protein bars by hand every week. They are now ready to take their production to the next level and expand into the United States.
"We've found that crickets contain more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach, making them the ideal candidate for protein powder in shakes and smoothies. We've seen other healthy food trends like juicing, kombucha, and farm-to-table take off in North America and we believe that cricket protein is next," said Chris Baird, Marketing Director of Coast Protein.
Being that crickets are a complete protein, they provide a nutritional alternative to heavily processed proteins. Crickets have a full amino acid profile and are environmentally friendly. Compared to cows, crickets require 2,000 times less water, produce 100 times less methane gas, and use a fraction the land for the same pound of protein.
"The problem with insects isn't the science, nutrition, or taste – they just have an image problem, and we have the ability to change that," said John Larigakis, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Coast Protein.
Coast Protein's cricket protein bars and powders are now available in a variety of flavours on Kickstarter until March 31st, and at select retailers across British Columbia. They have partnered with a tree planting company in British Columbia to personally plant 10,000 trees this coming June. If they hit their stretch goal of $30,000 they will produce their 3rd flavour of protein bar: Cranberry Ginger.
