Capitol Hill Forum to Propose Urgent Solutions for Ukraine as Winter Approaches
TUCKER, Ga., Sept. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Save Ukraine Now (www.saveukrainenow.org), a non-partisan, inter-faith coalition formed to alleviate Ukraine's humanitarian catastrophe, today announced it will emphasize the urgency of immediate action at an upcoming Capitol Hill Form co-hosted with the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation. The Forum will analyze the military, political and humanitarian dimensions of the crisis and then meet in workshops to propose "360-degree" solutions to meet the harsh Ukrainian winter.
The event, Ukraine's Ongoing Battle for Freedom – The Risk of Western Failure in Political, Economic and Humanitarian Assistance," will take place in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., on September 25, 2015. General (ret.) Wesley Clark, Chairman of the Board for Save Ukraine Now, will address the gathering as the keynote speaker.
Dr. Gary Kellner, President and Founder of Save Ukraine Now, said, "Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children face the winter in Ukraine without adequate clothing, food and medicine. We've seen the impact of waves of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria and the danger of neglecting humanitarian crises. This Forum will spur our leaders, and the American people, to action in Ukraine before it's too late."
A broad coalition of decision-makers will attend the Forum including members of Congress, Cabinet ministers of Ukraine and leaders from faith-based communities, civic associations and non-profit organizations. The House and Senate Ukraine Caucuses are sponsors, and clergy from all of the major religious confessions in Ukraine will participate.
According to the United Nations, five million people have been affected by the conflict in Ukraine, up to 1.7 million of them children. With 1.4 million people displaced within Ukraine, refugees are flooding all the major cities. Yet only about a third of the needed support has been funded and pledged by the international community.
Dr. Kellner concluded, "The number of Ukrainian refugees has more than tripled in the last year, and the desperation is palpable. This Forum will drive home the gravity of the situation and the necessity for all people of good will to respond."
