KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C., April 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Francisco World Spirits Competition announced the results from its 12th annual competition. This competition had 1200 spirits enter from 65 countries, the largest number of entries in its history. The competition is judged by 34 of the most sophisticated palates in the industry and the competition is the oldest, largest and most recognized spirit competition in the United States. Entries are not recognized by who does the most advertising, which brand is the biggest seller, or any other external factors. All spirits are tasted completely blind and the judges have no idea what brands they are tasting until the end when all votes have been cast and tallied.
North Carolina based Cardinal Gin was the only American made gin to win the Double Gold status this year. Cardinal Gin was also awarded the gold medal at the Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago and rated the highest domestic gin in 2011. Cardinal Gin is hand crafted with 11 organic and wild harvested botanicals and is distilled in small batches. "We are extremely happy to be recognized by both competitions as being one of the world's best gins," said Alex Mauney, Owner of Southern Artisan Spirits. Cardinal Gin is currently distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and New Jersey.
Gold medals are only awarded to spirits that are indeed truly excellent. A gold medal winner is not only free from flaws but delivers a vastly superior drinking experience. Single gold medals are difficult to obtain and if all judges are not in agreement they are rarely given. If the spirit is unanimously seen by the judges as superior and above the pack, then it is given a "Double gold".
