Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons, In Collaboration with Heart Hospital of Austin, First in U.S. to Use GORE® EXCLUDER® Iliac Branch Endoprosthesis
First all-in-one system to preserve iliac artery blood flow in patients
AUSTIN, Texas, April 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- On April 12, 2016, a vascular surgeon with Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons became the first in the nation to implant the GORE® EXCLUDER® Iliac Branch Endoprosthesis (IBE)—the first off-the-shelf aortic branch device approved in the U.S. and the only device designed for the endovascular treatment of common iliac artery aneurysms or aortoiliac aneurysms. Mazin Foteh, M.D., performed the procedure at Heart Hospital of Austin.
"The iliac branch device provides a significant advancement for patients suffering from iliac artery aneurysms, which can cause life-threatening uncontrolled bleeding," Dr. Foteh said. "This new technology is extremely important as it provides an iliac branch solution for patients with a previously unmet treatment need."
The first-of-its-kind device is used in conjunction with the GORE® EXCLUDER® AAA Endoprosthesis to isolate the common iliac artery from systemic blood flow and preserve blood flow in the external iliac and internal iliac arteries—a group of arteries located in the pelvis.
The IBE offers an all-in-one system with improved outcomes for the treatment of iliac artery aneurysms while preserving flow to the iliac arteries, which is the recommended treatment by vascular surgeons to sustain patient quality of life. Iliac arteries are a group of vessels that supply blood to the pelvic organs, gluteal region and legs. Preservation of blood flow in the internal iliac arteries is found to avoid pelvic flow disruption and reduce the rate of claudication, sexual dysfunction and colonic ischemia.
"Every day, new technologies pave the way for better treatment options and an improved quality of life for our patients," David Laird, chief executive officer of Heart Hospital of Austin, said. "The addition of this technology is part of Heart Hospital of Austin's commitment to providing the most effective and innovative cardiovascular care possible to our patients."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the GORE® EXCLUDER® Iliac device in March 2016.
