CAREFORTH EXPANDS SERVICES TO FURTHER SUPPORT OHIO'S CAREGIVERS
Structured Family Caregiving, Including Coaching and Support Services, Now Available to Families Caring for Medicaid-Eligible Loved Ones at Home
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Careforth, a leading provider of caregiver support services, has expanded in Ohio to provide Structured Family Caregiving (SFC), a service that supports older adults and adults with physical disabilities and their family caregivers. Careforth has supported caregivers through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities' Shared Living service since 2011. With this expansion, SFC and caregiver coaching support are now accessible across the entire state, bringing resources directly to caregivers who live with and care for their loved ones.
The new Structured Family Caregiving service administered by the Ohio Department of Aging and the Ohio Department of Medicaid is available to adults eligible for Medicaid and the PASSPORT (aged 60+), Ohio Home Care (aged 18-59), or MyCare (aged 18+ and living in the MyCare regions) Waivers. To participate, the Medicaid member and caregiver must live in the same home, and the member must require assistance with their daily care needs and choose to receive that assistance from their live-in caregiver through SFC. Live-in caregivers may be individuals chosen by the member – unrelated or related – who meet the State's eligibility criteria.
"The need to support caregivers continues to grow, with 63 million people across the country currently serving as caregivers for loved ones. This new Structured Family Caregiving service is a lifeline for Ohio family caregivers needing support and assistance," said Marc Russo, Careforth CEO. "Family caregivers are the cornerstone of our healthcare system, yet they are often unrecognized and have no support. From my personal experience, caregiving is one of the hardest and most important jobs in the world. Careforth helps families receive the support they need to provide care at home while building a community around them and their loved ones, because caregiving is a journey that shouldn't be managed alone."
Careforth pays a financial stipend and offers caregiver coaching services to family caregivers caring for eligible Medicaid members. Caregivers will be partnered with a team of dedicated professionals, including licensed nurses and social workers, who will provide ongoing education, coaching, and support. Careforth understands the need to help caregivers find ways to take breaks from caregiving, to prevent burnout, and connects caregivers with respite support and local resources, too.
"Our Careforth care teams provide essential support for family caregivers. We offer guidance on everything from managing daily care to addressing the unique challenges and stresses that caregivers face," says Elio Harmon, Careforth's director of community partnerships, an Ohioan and a caregiver. "In my travels across the state of Ohio, I've met hundreds of caregivers in rural communities, small towns, and city centers who are going it alone and don't know help is available. I'm grateful we can now support them on their caregiving journeys."
A provider of caregiver support services for 25 years, Careforth improves health care outcomes and lowers the cost of care. Recent findings from a partnership with ATI Advisory, a leading healthcare research and advisory services firm, show that participants of Careforth's SFC services have a 45% lower probability of falls and a 21% lower probability of emergency department visits compared to a comparable group of dual-eligible (Medicare-Medicaid) beneficiaries.
