Carillion Energy Agrees Households Need To Act Now To Reduce Their Central Heating Costs

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, England, May 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Energy and Climate Change has released figures showing that greenhouse gases, including CO2, rose by 2.8% in 2010, making the UK's 2022 target of reducing emissions by 35% a real challenge.

These figures coincide with the release of government's plans to install 53 million smart meters country wide, but smart meters are only part of the solution. As the economy picks up, fossil fuel use will increase and fuel prices will inevitably be pushed upwards leaving ordinary households to economise where possible. Considering that carbon dioxide emissions from homes, which are mainly caused by central heating and cooking, rose by 13.4% in 2010, households need to take action, fast.

To help with this the company has produced a simple guide with energy efficiency tips to help families cut central heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint straight away:

1. Turn your thermostat down.  Reducing your room temperature by just 1°C could cut your central heating bills by up to 10%, saving around 55 pounds Sterling per year.

2. Heat only when you need it.  Set your heating and hot water to come on only when necessary. This will vary over the seasons so change your time settings at least four times a year (spring, summer, autumn and winter).

3. Reduce your water temperature.  If you mix cold water with hot water to get your bath temperature right, your cylinder thermostat may be set to too high. Ideally, your thermostat should be set at 60 degrees C/140 degrees F.

4. Don't obstruct your radiators.  Placing furniture or other objects in front of your radiators can absorb the heat and reduce the radiator's efficiency.

5. Bleed your radiators regularly.  This removes unwanted air which obstructs the flow of hot water round the system making it less efficient.
