The Montreal Protocol is widely viewed as one of the most successful environmental treaties as it set in motion the global phase-out of ozone depleting substances such as  chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used as refrigerants.  Carrier pioneered the phase-out of CFCs for the air conditioning and refrigeration industry in 1994, two years ahead of U.S. requirements and 16 years before mandates in developing countries. The company's PrimeLINE® container refrigeration unit is an example of this innovation -- designed specifically to reduce environmental impact and lifecycle cost through exceptional efficiency. The PrimeLINE unit's lifecycle cost is up to 30 percent lower than all competitive units. The reduced power requirements also help conserve precious fossil fuel, lowering particulate and carbon dioxide emissions. As an example, Carrier has pushed the performance of its residential air conditioning Infinity™ Series, with Puron® non-ozone depleting refrigerant, to 21 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), requiring 40 percent less energy to operate than today's minimum efficiency systems.

Commercial building owners also turn to Carrier to provide energy efficient sustainable solutions. As an example, to optimize energy consumption, the ITC Hotel Royal Gardenia in Bengaluru, India required the most efficient chiller systems that would meet the demands of the local climate and the challenging energy needs of a hotel. The ITC Royal Gardenia selected Carrier's world-leading Evergreen® 23XRV chiller with non-ozone depleting refrigerant. Recently, the Dalian Wanda Group, a renowned real estate enterprise in China, awarded a chiller purchasing contract to Carrier to supply up to 300 energy efficient chillers with non-ozone depleting refrigerant.  

Carrier works to improve the world we live in and recently signed a supply agreement with Handelshof Cash & Carry, a German food retailer, for the delivery and service of a CO2OLtec™ refrigeration system as well as a fully integrated high efficiency heat recovery system, which will reduce heating energy consumption by 80 percent. The state-of-the-art refrigeration system using CO2 refrigerant significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The CO2OLtec food retail refrigeration system uses natural refrigerant carbon dioxide and is installed at more than 140 sites across Europe. The CO2OLtec system delivers up to 10 percent higher energy efficiency in cooler climates compared to systems using conventional refrigerants. Carbon dioxide as a refrigerant is non-ozone depleting with minimal global warming potential. "Carrier has the right refrigerant solution for every application, but every application will not have the same refrigerant solution," said Mandyck.
