For SUVs of this size to be properly and safely able to get up and going, it takes a fair amount of power. The 2014 Buick Enlcave comes with a 3.6-liter, V-6 engine that has a top engine output of 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Conventional wisdom would dictate that this would be the least amount of power available to a body on frame SUV like the Toyota Highlander. That is not the case, the 2014 Highlander base model is outfitted with a 2.7-liter, four-cylinder engine that turns out more than 100 horsepower less than the V-6 on the Enclave.

Even playing devil's advocate for the Highlander, one could say that with the lower power output, there must be a huge gain in fuel-economy. This is also not the case. Yes, the four-cylinder engine under the hood of the 2014 Highlander had Environmental Protection agency scores of 20 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. This is only three miles per gallon more than the Enclave posts in the city with 100 more horsepower and a one mpg difference on the highway. While the Highlander does offer a V-6 engine, a customer has to navigate through a couple of trim levels to get there first.
