CHICAGO, March 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- CBOE Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: CBOE) today announced that February trading volume for options on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and C2 Options Exchange (C2), the company's new alternative all-electronic market, combined, totaled 95.1 million contracts, an average daily volume (ADV) of 5.0 million contracts. Futures trading on CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE) in February set a new monthly volume record for the second straight month; nearly 790,000 contracts were traded, an ADV of 41,565 contracts.

CBOE Options Trading (Excludes C2):
- CBOE total options – February 2011 total ADV was a 14-percent increase from 4.25 million contracts per day in February 2010 and a five-percent decrease from January 2011 ADV of 5.13 million contracts.
- CBOE index options – February 2011 index options ADV was 1.106 million contracts, down one percent from 1.119 million contracts ADV in February 2010 and down two percent from January 2011 ADV of 1.124 million contracts.
- CBOE equity options – February 2011 equity options ADV was 2.59 million contracts, up 25 percent from 2.08 million contracts per day in February 2010 and down 11 percent from 2.90 million contracts per day in January 2011.
- CBOE ETF options – February 2011 ETF options ADV was 1.16 million contracts, up 11 percent from 1.05 million contracts ADV in February 2010 and up four percent from 1.11 million contracts per day in January 2011.
- The top five most actively traded index and ETF options at CBOE during February were the S&P 500 Index (SPX), Standard and Poor's Depositary Receipts (SPY), CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), iShares Trust Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM), and PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQQ).
- The top five most actively traded equity options at CBOE during February were Citigroup (C), Bank of America (BAC), Apple (AAPL), Cisco Systems (CSCO), and Ford Motor Company (F).

CBOE Market Share: CBOE's market share of total U.S. options industry volume in February was 26.0 percent, down 1.1 percentage points from January 2011 and down 4.7 percentage points from February 2010. If the volume from dividend trades – all attributable to equity options in February – was excluded from CBOE's data for February 2011, the Exchange's total market share for February would increase to 26.9 percent from 26.0 percent, an increase of 0.9 market share points. Exclusion of dividend trades from total industry volume data presents a more relevant measure of the relative trends in the options business.

- Index options – CBOE's market share was 94.5 percent, down 0.6 of a percentage point from January 2011 and down 0.3 of a percentage point from February 2010.
- Equity options – CBOE's market share was 22.4 percent, down 1.1 percentage points from January 2011 and down 2.8 percentage points from February 2010.
- ETF options – CBOE's market share was 19.6 percent, down one percentage point from January 2011 and down 4.2 percentage points from February 2010.
C2 Trading Volume and Market Share:
In February, C2 trading volume totaled more than 2.8 million contracts. C2 average daily volume in February was 148,800 contracts, down five percent from January 2011 ADV of 156,000 contracts. C2 ETF ADV rose six percent, and equity option ADV decreased 13 percent from January 2011 ADV.
C2 now lists 360 options classes, representing 81 percent of all U.S. options trading volume.

CFE Futures Trading:
- With volume totaling 789,734 contracts, CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE) recorded its most active month ever in February. ADV at CFE in February was a record 41,565 contracts, up 320 percent from February 2010 and a four-percent increase from January 2010. This was the first month in which CFE ADV has exceeded 40,000 contracts.
- CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) futures posted record monthly volume of 788,908 contracts in February, an ADV of 41,521 contracts
- February marked the seventeenth consecutive month of year-over-year volume increases for CFE.
CBOE Holdings Average Transaction Fee Per Contract:
The following represents average transaction fee per contract based on a three-month rolling average, reported on a one-month lag. The average transaction fee per contract represents total transaction fees for CBOE, C2, and CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE) recognized for the period divided by total contracts traded during the period. Average transaction fees per contract can be affected by various factors, including exchange fee rates, volume-based discounts and transaction mix by contract type and product type.
