Century Auction Group Puts Maryland's 'The Pony Farm' on the Auction Block
MILLERSVILLE, Md., April 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Grosh family of Cumberland, Md., is done standing their ground. For years, Brian and Tammie Grosh, who own a highly controversial property that's uniquely located between the C&O Canal and the Potomac River, have wrestled with defining and retaining rights to their waterfront land, which has been known since the 1850s as "The Pony Farm." Ready to move on, they have decided to sell their property to the highest bidder.
Specifically, the couple has disagreed in the past over property lines with the Federal Government and Maryland State Highway Association. And for good reason -- the Grosh's park-like land, which encompasses +/- 36 acres, including extensive river frontage on the Potomac, is truly unlike any other property in the area. Come May 18, Century Auction Group (http://CenturyAuctionGroup.com), a regional firm specializing in real estate auctions, estate sales and business liquidations, will put the land and the Grosh's recently rebuilt five-bedroom, four-bath home on the auction block. Century's Paul Sobwick, a former Maryland Auctioneer of the Year, will conduct the auction, which starts at noon and takes place at 1 Elizabeth Street, Cumberland, Md., 21502.
"The Pony Farm is being offered 'absolute,' meaning it will sell to the highest bidder, with no contingencies," Sobwick says. "Since there's a fine home and lots of land at stake, it could be worth quite a bit of money. The Grosh's plight has been big local news for some time, and this upcoming auction adds to the intrigue. We're expecting a full house of bidders, from outfitters to conservationists to government officials to speculators and more."
Anyone with bidding interest in The Pony Farm is invited to research the property's issues and features. The auction company will provide all available property information upon request. Business ventures nearby and upstream, including a proposed re-opening of the canal to boat traffic, a man-made whitewater rafting course, and biking and hiking trails could also impact the property someday.
"Property rights and other concerns aside, what does belong to the Grosh family is a very unique stretch of waterfront property in Cumberland," Sobwick says. "This extensive river frontage sits on the Potomac and is a haven for outfitters, outdoorsmen, conservationists, visionaries and others alike."
