NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Century Health, a pioneer in applying AI to real-world clinical data to accelerate research, and Eye Health America (EHA), a leading integrated eye care platform in the Southeastern United States, today announced a partnership to transform years of clinical data into research-grade datasets that support real-world evidence generation and life sciences research for chronic retinal conditions, including diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Ophthalmology is one of the most quantitative fields in medicine, requiring highly precise, individualized, longitudinal data. But disease progression measurements are generally trapped inside PDF attachments and scanned reports rather than entered into the EHR as structured data. As a result, studies, which typically rely only on structured EHR fields, miss critical aspects of the clinical picture. This leaves drug developers and clinicians with an incomplete view of how these diseases actually progress and how patients respond to treatment in routine care.

These ongoing progression measurements are critical for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and AMD. Both conditions are chronic and progressive, requiring years of monitoring and treatment to preserve vision, and affect a significant and growing share of Americans. An estimated 9.6 million people with diabetes live with diabetic retinopathy, including nearly 1.84 million with a vision-threatening form of the disease. AMD affects an estimated 19.8 million people, with prevalence rising sharply after age 65. Response to therapy varies widely, and treatment decisions often depend on subtle changes in retinal structure over time rather than at diagnosis.

The Century Health Abstraction and Retrieval Model, CHARM, will enable EHA to use these unstructured reports, some going back more than 10 years, to extract key values for quantitative retinal measurements and disease progression metrics. CHARM converts this historical, otherwise inaccessible data into structured datasets for research.

Drawing on more than 200,000 de-identified records, the partnership will create one of the most detailed longitudinal datasets on chronic retinal disease available for research, supporting life sciences research into how these conditions respond to real-world variables.
