Champion Energy Approved to Enter Illinois' Commonwealth Edison Residential Electricity Market
HOUSTON, Nov. 5, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Scott Fordham, president and chief executive officer, today announced that Champion Energy, LLC (championenergyservices.com) plans to move into Illinois' Commonwealth Edison "ComEd" residential electricity market in early-2011. ComEd currently serves 3.8 million customers, representing approximately 70 percent of the Illinois population, including the Greater Chicago area.
Champion Energy was granted a license to serve commercial, industrial and governmental customers in January 2007 and received approval to serve deregulated residential electricity markets in Illinois in May 2010.
The company's new market entry brings opportunities for residential customers to save on electricity compared to ComEd's standard fixed-rate service, for which the Illinois Commerce Commission publishes detailed information about electric supply options at pluginillinois.org, Illinois' state-sponsored consumer electricity shopping site. Upon Champion Energy's market entry, consumers will have access to Champion Energy's standard and 100 percent renewable electricity plans with a 12-month contract term, both of which provide price security for one year.
"Champion Energy's move into Illinois' ComEd residential market is strategically similar to our April 2010 move into Pennsylvania's PPL residential market, with a unique focus on transparency and education, backed by exceptional rates and exemplary customer care," said Fordham. "We encourage consumers to visit www.championenergyservices.com/IL/ to register to receive rates and a preferred partner offer as soon as we begin service."
While Illinois's deregulation of electricity allows consumers to select the Retail Electric Supplier of their choice, the transmission and distribution of electricity remains regulated, and the incumbents — Commonwealth Edison, Ameren Illinois, MidAmerican Energy, Mt. Carmel Public Utility — continue to distribute electricity, deliver default electricity services and provide customer service. These local utility companies are also responsible for providing line maintenance and repair, restoring service after outages and providing customer metering and billing services.
