WASHINGTON, June 13, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To announce the National Center for Special Education in Charter Schools (NCSECS) Equity Coalition joint statement on discipline, Lauren Morando Rhim, NCSECS executive director issued the following statement:
"I am proud to share this unprecedented work demonstrating the deep commitment to assuring all students can receive a quality education. When we launched NCSECS nearly three years ago, we imagined bringing a diverse group together to speak in a unified voice in support of students with disabilities. This collaborative effort is the first concrete manifestation of that goal and shows the agreement that exists among those advocating for and educating students with disabilities."
In 2014, the National Center for Special Education in Charter Schools convened the Equity Coalition to form a collaborative community of diverse representatives from the charter school and special education communities to identify common ground and take collective action. Today, the NCSECS Equity Coalition released a groundbreaking statement in support of charter schools creating inclusive, positive environments with trained and effective personnel providing all students a quality education.
Rhim concluded, "While there are many challenging issues facing both traditional and charter schools, there are unique opportunities in charters that we want to see more fully realized. Today, this statement from the Equity Coalition marks an important first-step to help us catalyze and take action to both change school practices and improve student outcomes. We look forward to developing a robust plan together to drive change in charter schools."
