Cheap Car Insurance: Tips to Finding Quotes That Fit the Family Budget
Cheap car insurance can be difficult to find for a family with teens; however, there are some ways to bring the cost of premiums down
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Especially in today's economy, families are finding it more important to stick to a budget. As children age into their teens, there is no exception when it comes to shopping for cheap car insurance. CheapCarInsurance.org offers some tips on how families can stay within budget.
When families are shopping around for cheap car insurance, they should note to the agent that they are interested in adding their teen drivers to their policy as an occasional driver rather than placing them on their own policy as a principal driver. The principal driver is the person that drives the car more than half the time and occasional drivers are additional family members who use the car. However, this is not an option if the teen has their own auto or if there are more cars than parental drivers.
If the young driver does have their own car, the type of vehicle matters. The more expensive and high performance an automobile is, the higher the auto premiums. A more affordable and safer vehicle will cut costs. These include older cars that have automatic safety belts, airbags, anti-lock brakes and anti-theft devices.
The young driver can qualify for discounts if they do not live at the family home permanently and do not have a car while they are away at boarding school or college. They can also qualify for good student discounts if their GPA meets the minimal requirements of the insurance company. Young drivers can also take certified driving courses in addition to state required courses to lower premiums.
If the family budget can afford a higher deductible, they can save on their monthly premiums. Also, collision coverage can be dropped if a vehicle is older and would not be worth repairing or replacing if in an accident or stolen.
When trying to get cheaper car insurance, liability coverage should never be dropped, especially with the shocking teen driving statics. For bodily injury liability, which are medical expenses and legal fees arising from an at fault accident, carry at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident. For property-damage liability, families should consider at least $50,000 coverage.
