Chicago Housing Authority Installs Warmly Yours Heated Floors in Rehabbed Senior Apartment Building
All 100 Units in Kenmore Senior Apartments to be Equipped with Heated Bathroom Tile
CHICAGO, Nov. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- In a first for Chicago's public housing, seniors living in the Chicago Housing Authority's newly rehabbed Kenmore Senior Apartments will have heated bathroom floors when the 100 units are ready for residents to move in this winter. The CHA chose Warmly Yours radiant floor heating systems—an easy-to-install electric floor warming product line—to make the units more comfortable for senior residents during the winter months.
Under the CHA's Plan for Transformation, the city is redeveloping and rehabilitating all public housing sites in Chicago with the assistance of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Kenmore Senior Apartments, located at 5040 N. Kenmore on Chicago's North Side, are nearing the end of a $16.8 million rehabilitation project that began in May 2009 and are expected to house the first residents this December.
The Warmly Yours TempZone radiant floor system being installed in all unit bathrooms consists of ultra-thin heating cables that are affixed to rolls of mesh and positioned invisibly between the subfloor and floor covering. There are no moving parts that wear out or filters to change, eliminating maintenance concerns. Each installed system costs pennies a day to operate - less than two 75-watt light bulbs in the space of an average size master bathroom. The system is UL Listed for safety and utilizes in-floor sensors that allow for precise temperature control.
"Even with adequate heating systems warming the apartments as a whole, linoleum bathroom floor tile can get extremely cold during the winter months. This is a real problem for seniors who are easily chilled and susceptible to illness," said Veronica Gonzalez, development manager for the CHA. "Installing Warmly Yours heated floors in the Kenmore rehab project will eliminate that discomfort at low cost, both in upfront investment and energy consumption over the long term, and with no maintenance expenses at all."
"For senior citizens, warmth is not just a matter of comfort. It's a matter of health," said Lindy Alo, National Accounts Manager for Warmly Yours. "The CHA recognized the value of our radiant heating systems in making the Kenmore apartments more livable, and arguably healthier, for senior residents. They will serve as a role model for other public housing agencies trying to meet the special needs of the older population."
