Chicanos Por La Causa And Telcel AMERICA Kick Off the New Year by Providing Smartphones to High-Achieving High School Students

PHOENIX, Jan. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Telcel AMERICA, a service provided by TracFone Wireless, Inc., America's largest no-contract cell provider and leader in the communications industry, has partnered with Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) to continue its grassroots initiative launched in December which provides the latest smartphones to Latino students and make it easier for them to stay in contact with friends and family members in the United States and Mexico. The program will help students to enter the digital mobile world with smartphones to allow them to stay in touch with family and friends and with everything that matters most to them.

Through a proprietary program called "Movilizacion Escolar con Telcel AMERICA," (Mobilizing Scholars with Telcel AMERICA), the company provided 75 Samsung Galaxy Precedent™ smartphones at no charge to Hispanic students participating in CPLC's Learning Center Program. "Movilizacion Escolar" will provide three months of complimentary airtime, which includes unlimited domestic and international calling as well as text and Internet access.  With Telcel AMERICA's service, the students will also be able to call mobile phones and landlines in Mexico.

Martin Quintana, CPLC Chief Economic Development Officer, along with Telcel AMERICA hosted a special ceremony to announce the recipients of smartphones via the "Movilizacion Escolar con Telcel AMERICA" program.  Rafael Mercadante, the noted Mexican actor, TV host and recording artist, showed his support for the cause of educational empowerment in the Latino community and continued to brighten up the day through a special performance that left the students elated.
