Children's Rights Advocate Helena Battle Empowers Children to Fight Against Pedophiles
New Book Reveals Tips to Keep Children Safe
SICKLERVILLE, N.J., Nov. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- "Let no child be violated!" is the mantra of child abuse prevention advocate Helena Battle and her new book, Kids-It's OK to Scream Out Loud to Get Away from a Pedophile Person.
"This book teaches and empowers children to protect themselves," explains Battle. Written in a kid-friendly format, the book is geared to stimulate conversation, as well as to offer tools on how to avoid becoming a victim. "I intentionally wrote the book with a lot of repetitiveness so that children will get it."
Battle notes that parents are children's first line of defense against pedophiles. She encourages moms and dads to have frank conversations with their children.
"Please let your kids know that most people are OK. But also let them know what to look for and how to protect themselves against people who are not OK, no matter whom it may be, including people they know," she said.
Child safety tips in the book include:
For children:
- It is your right to protect yourself.
- Let your parents know where you are.
- Be aware of your surroundings. After dark, stand in well-lit areas, not near bushes or lots of trees. In public, stay where you can be seen and heard.
- It's okay to talk to your parents, guardians, grandparents, teachers or principal.
- When waiting for the school bus, do not stand alone. Stand with others.
- Don't accept rides from strangers.
- Avoid strangers who ask you to help find their lost puppies or kittens – a trick used by pedophiles.
For parents and teachers:
- Teach children about personal safety.
- Keep the lines of communication open.
- Teach children about protecting themselves from inappropriate touching.
Known by the kids in her neighborhood as Aunt Helena, Battle has long been an advocate of children's rights and preventing child abuse. A volunteer at her son's junior high school, Battle understands the vulnerability of children.
"I wrote this book by my desire to give children as much awareness as possible and reassure them that they can be empowered through knowledge and that the world would hear their voices. I believe every child has the right to be free from violation," she said.
