China Accelerates Deployment of Compass Satellite Navigation System, Senior U.S. Officials to Present New GNSS Policy
SHANGHAI, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- On August 1, China launched the fifth Beidou (or Compass) navigation satellite into space, moving it one step closer to its goal of building a navigation & positioning satellite network. This is the third Compass satellite launched this year, following launches on January 17 and June 2. The development of this system follows a "three-step" strategy and is getting more mature in terms of civil and commercial uses. Its rapid growth has drawn close attention from the capital markets. Gotecom, which marks the "first 'A' share in satellite navigation and positioning," was much favoured when it went public on ChiNext and had a soaring share price. As one of the key sponsors of NaviForum, the leading Chinese navigable map provider AutoNavi went public on NASDAQ in July and its share price is growing steadily.
As the largest developing country in the Age of Information, China has become the world's third country -- following the U.S. and Russia -- to have its self-owned navigation satellite system, and is developing rapidly to challenge the space supremacy of the U.S. At the forthcoming NaviForum Shanghai 2010 event, senior U.S. officials will give presentations on global GNSS on behalf of the U.S. government.
Jeff Auerbach, Advisor on GNSS Affairs, Office of Space and Advanced Technology, U.S. Department of State, will make a presentation on "U.S. International GNSS Cooperation," and Anthony Russo, Director of the U.S. National Coordination Office for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing, will make a keynote about "GPS Constellation, Modernization Plans and Policy." In addition, several top U.S. elites will together deliver a heated panel discussion on the "Driving Force for GNSS Development in North America." Moderated by Glen Gibbons, Editor & Publisher of Inside GNSS, the panel will include four distinguished panelists: Kanwar Chadha, Chief Marketing Officer, CSR; Dr. Cormac Conroy, Vice President of Engineering, Qualcomm; Mike Shaw, Director of Navigation Systems Global Business Development, Lockheed Martin Corporation; and Dominique Bonte, Practice Director for Telematics and Navigation, ABI Research. It's worth noting that the top Chinese official in charge of the Compass system, Mr. Chengqi Ran, Deputy Director of China Satellite Navigation Engineering Center, will be present at the event with his companions and make a keynote on behalf of the Chinese government. The NaviForum 2010 event will witness the meeting of the two countries' top leaders of GNSS. We shall wait to see whether the global GNSS pattern be influenced by the cooperation of the "G2" GNSS between the China Compass system and the U.S. GPS system. So far, there is no confirmed word yet on whether or not the European Galileo program will send people to participate in the event.
Known as the most important event in the China satellite navigation industry, NaviForum Shanghai has been successfully held for four consecutive years since 2004, and NaviForum Shanghai 2010 will be held together with the International ITS Conference & Expo Shanghai 2010.
