City Of Philadelphia Honors Gateway Health And Salvation Army For Successful Senior Program
PHILADELPHIA, June 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway HealthSM and the Salvation Army Philadelphia Tabernacle Corps Community Center are raising awareness of the positive benefits of health and exercise with the senior citizen population in the community. Through a series of health workshops designed to teach health tips to the aging population, the ultimate goal is improving the quality of life for older Philadelphians.
"We believe that the best way to craft lasting solutions is through strong partnerships with organizations like the Salvation Army Tabernacle Corps that share our same commitment to serve our communities," said Yolanda Jimenez Colón, Gateway Health Senior Community Affair Specialist.
The City of Philadelphia recently granted a proclamation to Gateway Health for their success with their senior program in collaboration with the local Salvation Army. The health and wellness workshops provide access to resources and services to at least 50-75 older adults and their families with a goal of helping them through mind, body, and spirit.
"Our goal is to provide individuals with the opportunity to learn how to better understand information about their own health and make informed healthcare decisions," said Colón. "We promote the importance of patient education through innovative, engaging and result driven programs."
The areas of focus from these workshops include addressing hunger along with the distribution of free lunches, how to access community food banks, and meal programs through social and recreational activities. A health literacy education program which provides workshops that offer solutions to those difficult health care questions such as what is health literacy, explaining when and how to take medications explaining hypertension and other medical scenarios as well as providing information on other community resources.
For their efforts, Gateway Health coordinated with Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sanchez and the City of Philadelphia to present the local Salvation Army with a certificate of appreciation to Captain Omar and Sheila Rolon.

"I am so grateful to the leaders of this initiative and their devoted corps of volunteers for the contributions they have made, and continue to make, in our community."
