Few healthcare professionals have more career options than skilled, licensed nurses. While nurses with RN certification or even a bachelor's degree have many options to choose from, many nurses seek advanced degrees that lead to nurse practitioner certification for even more flexibility and room for advancement.
Nurse practitioners are an integral part of medical provider teams, along with physicians and physician assistants, in both primary care and specialty practice.
"In today's uncertain economic climate, one thing is for sure: Jobs in the healthcare field will continue to be in demand," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. "And the increasing costs of medical care have made Nurse Practitioners prized players for their expertise and accessibility."
College Choice developed its list by examining both the MSN degrees and the DNP degrees that qualify nurses for a career as a Nurse Practitioner. It created two separate rankings, for both the MSN and the DNP. The criteria for the rankings was based on academic reputation, student satisfaction, affordability, and average annual salary of graduates from online nurse practitioner programs across the country. Data comes from PayScale, university and colleges' websites, U.S. News & World Report, and The National Center for Education Statistics.
The ranking for the 25 Best Online Nurse Practitioner Degree Programs for 2017 finds Duke University, Georgetown University, and The Ohio State University topping the MSN ranking. Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, and Rush University top the DNP ranking.
