At a time when shortages of qualified teachers are looming in many states and school districts, future educators have the potential to advance quickly in their field, especially if they have completed a graduate-level education. Since many people who might be interested in such a degree are already working, whether in education or another field, getting the degree online could be a practical choice.
"Getting a master's in education might not be a bad financial move, especially if it's online," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. "Due to the potential teacher shortage crisis, many states' departments of education are working to increase the number of quality instructors in the classroom through policy changes, scholarships, grants, and loan forgiveness incentives."
College Choice developed its list by looking at academic quality along with return on investment—the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings.
The ranking for the 50 Best Online Master's in Education Degrees for 2017 finds the University of Houston in the top spot. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is in second, and the University of Georgia rounds out the top three.
