Con-way Inc. Names 2013 CEO Constellation Award Recipients

ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) announced that six outstanding employees have been named recipients of the CEO Constellation Award, the highest honor bestowed by the company to recognize exemplary employees.

In its seventh year, this employee recognition program draws from thousands of submitted candidates who were nominated by their peers as employees who best exemplify the company's core values of safety, integrity, commitment and excellence.

Receiving a Constellation Award is not an easy feat. The six 2013 winners were chosen from 24 employees who were named President's Award winners for 2012. The President's Award recipients were selected from nearly 400 Quarterly Leader Award recipients, which were drawn from thousands of nominations submitted by employees. CEO Constellation Award winners each receive a sculptured crystal vase inscribed with their name, a monetary prize and a lifetime of recognition within the company. The awards were presented by Mr. Stotlar and his executive leadership team at a special recognition event earlier this month.

Mr. Billy Cartright, senior director of operations, Con-way Truckload, Joplin, Mo.:
Billy's focus is not only on the success of the company, but also the development and continuous advancement of the individuals he works with as a part of his job as senior director of operations. His colleagues report that his integrity and work ethic sets the standard for Con-way Truckload. A succinct example that speaks volumes about Billy's character was shared by a fellow employee. After a week away from home working in another country, Billy noticed that a member of our Armed Forces was stranded at the airport en route to going home to see his ailing mother. Without thinking twice, Billy made arrangements and offered to take the soldier directly to his destination in his own car, delaying the reunion with his own family. Billy exceeds the expectations of Con-way's core values and exhibits them wherever he goes.

Mr. Richard Jinks, driver sales representative, Con-way Freight, Fremont, Ind.:
One of the key attributes of a good leader is the constant willingness to learn from others and implement well-thought-out policies and programs. A Con-way Freight Distinguished Driver who has driven over one million miles accident-free, Richard's commitment to mentorship and teaching is what made him strive to be a driver trainer. His success in the position is exhibited every day in the millions of accident-free miles his graduates have logged. In fact, Richard is so committed to safety that he once froze a piece of equipment in order to thoroughly test its durability in extreme cold. His dedication to safety and to helping others better their skills is why Richard is so well-regarded among his peers.

Mr. Ron Simmons, director of operations, Boston region, Con-way Freight, Shrewsbury, Mass.: Ron's humble, inclusive and decisive nature is what makes him both successful and well-respected. He's been described as being a "true collaborative leader" who empowers his direct reports with authority and accountability for critical business decisions. An excellent example of "servant leadership," Ron treats his employees as a family and fosters a team approach to ensure successful operations. His reputation precedes him, as on multiple occasions, employees from other locations would comment that they would be "proud, honored and excited" to work for Ron — one of the highest compliments a director can receive.

Ms. Brittany Denham, supervisor of operations, Menlo Worldwide Logistics, Brownstown, Mich.: Brittany has been likened to a sponge for her ability to soak up information, called "the perfect role model to commitment," "customer-driven" and lauded for her professionalism under pressure. Those are high accolades from the peers she has worked with during her six years with Menlo. She has built in-depth and trusting relationships with customers and oversaw the successful launch of a new site, new system, and new business. Brittany holds her team of 25 associates to the same standards she sets for herself, raising the bar for performance and always rewarding her team members for meeting the challenge. 

Mr. Dale Knox, driver sales representative, Con-way Freight, Erie, Pa.: Dale's name has been synonymous with "safety" since he first joined Con-way in 1987. Along with being a lead driver trainer, he conducts safety seminars at community events. He's a mainstay at Pennsylvania Department of Transportation safety conferences and is widely known as a subject matter expert. Dale's commitment to safety goes beyond the skill and proper behavior he exhibits behind the wheel. He's even made numerous safety improvements on the docks, including improving yard flow, ensuring proper illumination and installing safety railings. Because of Dale, the roads and docks are a safer place.

Ms. Nancy Kramarczyk, senior supervisor of transportation/GMCCA, Menlo Worldwide Logistics, Grand Blanc, Mich.: When your direct reports say this about you: "On a daily basis she exemplifies all that a supervisor should be and inspires her team," you must be doing something right. Nancy has made a name for herself by using her supply chain experience and leading a team whose success hinges on ensuring the satisfaction of the customers of a major automobile manufacturer.
