Concern for Independent Living Awarded Over $12 Million to Develop Housing For Veterans in Amityville

MEDFORD, N.Y., Jan. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Concern for Independent Living, a leading nonprofit provider of supportive housing, has been awarded an allocation of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits from New York State Homes and Community Renewal.  The allocation will result in $12,519,160 of funding that will be used to develop 60 units of housing for homeless veterans and their families. 

The site is located on the former North Amityville Armed Forces Reserve Center in Suffolk County, Long Island.   This project will provide safe, affordable housing and supportive services in beautiful newly constructed apartments.  Construction is expected to begin in August 2012.

Residents will enjoy semi-private yards, on-site laundry facilities, off-street parking and access to an adjacent Community Resource Center.  Supportive services, including goal planning and assistance, medication management, assistance with daily living skills, assistance with benefits, parenting training and assistance, crisis intervention, and supported employment, will be provided on- and off-site with the goal of assisting residents to achieve the highest level of independence possible.  United Veterans Beacon House will join Concern in providing services and opportunities for the veterans living in this housing.

Concern will acquire the property from the Town of Babylon Local Redevelopment Authority pursuant to the Base Closure Community Redevelopment and Homeless Assistance Act of 1994.  They will seek additional funding from New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and Bank of America.
