Congressman Fattah Receives Two Honors for Leadership - in Healthcare and Criminal Justice
WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) is receiving two awards this week for his leadership and advocacy on criminal justice and children's health. The Philadelphia Congressman has received five national and local leadership awards in recent months – including two that focus on healthcare.
Fattah has been a leader in Congress for enactment of President Obama's Affordable Care Act, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and other initiatives to extend full healthcare coverage to all Americans, especially the youngest, the oldest, and those uninsured or underinsured.
Fattah was honored Wednesday by the Council of State Governments Justice Center for his leadership on key criminal justice issues, including the Second Chance Act, which has provided critical support for state and local governments to help reduce recidivism and curb corrections costs.
On Friday, Fattah receives the Children's Champion Award from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This award, established by CHOP in 2007, is given to those that have engaged in sustained advocacy initiatives resulting in the creation of policies, practices or outcomes that positively affect child health.
"Throughout his career, Congressman Chaka Fattah has been a key partner in advocating for the health and well being of children," said Steven M. Altschuler, M.D., chief executive officer of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "Beginning with his pivotal support of the CHIP program, the Congressman continues to play a significant role to ensure all children have access to healthcare coverage and that there are pediatricians available to care for them."
CHOP is also honoring Pennsylvania State Representative Katharine M. Watson (R-Bucks County). Previous recipients include former Gov. Ed Rendell, Congressman Charlie Dent (R-PA), Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), former Pennsylvania First Lady Michele Ridge and Peters D. Willson, former Vice President of Public Policy at the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions.
In September, Fattah received the Vanguard Award from the Movement is Life Summit of the 2011 National Caucus on Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Health Disparities for his "fierce advocacy for health issues" and support of the goals of Movement is Life.
The broad-based organization includes the Arthritis Foundation, American Diabetes Association, Association of Black Cardiologists, American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Latino Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Women's Health Physicians, Association of Minority Health Professions Schools, Inc., Black Women's Health Imperative, Centers for Disease Control, Conference of National Black Churches, J.
