Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA-02), Congressional leader for education reform and equity, will address a national symposium on advancing education equity at ETS headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Congressman will be speaking to an audience of education stakeholders including business, law and politics about closing the opportunity gaps in public education. He will address the challenges and imperatives for equitable distribution of education resources, and the barriers that poverty creates for student achievement.

Fattah led the creation of the U.S. Department of Education's Equity and Excellence Commission with Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA). Fattah is the author of two significant bills in the current Congress for resource equity, the Student Bill of Rights Act (H.R. 1295) and the ESEA Fiscal Fairness Act (H.R. 1294).
"Currently, many school districts and states provide the least educational resources –in terms of highly effective teachers, college prep curricula, instructional materials and high quality early learning-- to students in the greatest need," Fattah said.
"This simply compounds the challenges of poverty and makes it more difficult for teachers and students in these schools and districts to achieve at the levels of wealthier and better resourced schools and districts. Research has consistently shown that more resources – not less – are needed when these children arrive at school underprepared and facing additional challenges at home and in their neighborhood," Fattah said. "Too often, education policy reinforces other social inequalities instead of leveling the field."
