Connecticut Governor Malloy to Welcome Guests at Stem Cell Symposium
FARMINGTON, Conn., March 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy will welcome attendees at StemCONN 2011, a full-day symposium on stem cell research that will take place Tuesday, March 22, at the Marriott Hotel in Farmington, CT.
"Stem cell research is paying off," said Governor Malloy. "This important work is attracting talent and capital to the state as well as providing new approaches to treating debilitating diseases."
The event brings together top stem cell researchers from Connecticut and around the country.
"Thanks to the state's pioneering support, Connecticut has become a major player in this area," said Dr. Laura Grabel, professor of biology at Wesleyan University and chair of the StemCONN 2011 organizing committee. "We are proud to demonstrate the progress that is being made."
In addition to scientific reports, the day's events include discussion of the legal aspects of stem cell research and commercial prospects for the stem cell industry, as well as a poster session, lunchtime seminars, and a networking reception.
"Research and development in the bioscience area is always a long journey," said Paul Pescatello, president and CEO of CURE (Connecticut United for Research Excellence), the state bioscience organization, a major sponsor of StemCONN 2011. "The translation of basic stem cell research into therapies, cures, and stem-cell-related entrepreneurial activity is well underway." Dr. Pescatello will chair a panel, "Stem Cells for Profit?" at the symposium.
